My Boys

My husband and I found out we were expecting just after my daughter’s first birthday. At my 1st OB appointment they confirmed I was 10 weeks pregnant and saw one happy, healthy heartbeat. We had also just found out in the weeks prior that I may be at risk of having poli-cystic kidney disease. My OB recommended I get screened, and so I made an appointment for a kidney ultrasound with a specialist for about 6 weeks later.

I headed to the kidney ultrasound and called the hubs before. “It shouldn’t take too long, I’ll call you as soon as I’m done.” They called me right in and I met the ultrasound tech “I am doing my training today, so my supervisor will be watching everything I do from the other room.” She informed me.

I laid back on the bed and let her know, “You know that I am expecting right?”
“Oh, no I didn’t but I am glad you told me…”
“Oh, yes. I see, there are your babies right there.”

“Um, I’m sorry, you mean baby, right?”

“Oh, you didn’t know you were expecting multiples... I am going to need to grab my supervisor.”
And she ran out of the room.

My heart sank. I didn’t know what to do. I wanted to laugh, I wanted to cry. I wanted to scream, I wanted to faint. All I knew was I was pretty sure I was going to get sick.

In came the supervisor to confirm, “Sweetheart, you are having twins. We are pretty sure they are identical. I am going to call your OB right away to get approval to do a uterine ultrasound. Until then just hang tight, we will do your kidney ultrasound while we wait for the approval.”

It seemed like an eternity {probably 5 minutes} before the tech brought the phone into me. “Hey Kim, this is Dr. Ramirez. Congratulations on the babies, I don’t know how we missed that before! I will no longer be seeing you because you are high risk, but you will be in good hands.”

After 45 minutes of ultrasounds it was time for me to go home. I had an appointment to see the high risk doctor in a week {who I got to see 3x a week for the next few months}.The room had no cell phone reception so I hadn’t been able to tell Keith the news.

“Are you sitting down hun.”
“No, I’m driving, what’s wrong.”
“My kidneys are fine. But there is something I need to tell you. We are having twins.”
“Oh SHIT.”

My thoughts exactly hun.

I still look at these miracles from God and wonder how on earth I was blessed with them. Mirror images of each other… So many similarities and yet so different.

I have to say, TWINS are hard. I don’t know them apart all the time. There were days when I thought one was the other until I changed their diaper {hidden in there is a little freckle, the only true way to tell them apart as babies}. I know some moms say they don’t have that problem, but I did. To me they are just happy, healthy, regular little boys. I just happened to be blessed DOUBLE!

Kaden and Kaleb,

You make my days a little busier, and a lot crazier. But most importantly you fill my days with joy. You both have a heart of gold and make me laugh all the time. I am so blessed that God trusted me to be your mommy. Thank you for loving me all the time.

  4. What a great story...one you will ALWAYS remember! Matt had the same reaction when our u/s tech told us we were having twins, and then said "umm, hold on...woah...actually, there's 3..." I think his first words {after I made sure he was ok, because he looked like he was gonna pass out!} were..."shit, I'm gonna have to trade in my truck for a damn minivan." Haha! :)

Anyway, your boys are beautiful!! A very Happy Birthday to them! :)
